DETROIT IN 1820: Shortly after Hiker Evans visited the city on the 4,000-mile tour. This picture, showing the steamer Walk-in-the-Water, is from a sketch by the famous painter Whistler's father, George H. Whistler. Detroit is on the distant shore of the river. The picture is reproduced here through the courtesy of its owner, Lloyd A. Brown, curator of maps at the Clements library in Ann Arbor.
