SHANTY VILLAGE OUTPOST: These fishing shacks at the Boyne City end of Lake Charlevoix are the outposts for Smeltania, a community of hundreds of shanties about a mile out on the ice. Ice-fishing enthusiasts from all over Michigan and from other states come here to angle for the silver-sided smelt whose numbers make large catches possible. Visible in the picture is one end of the Christmas trees that form a line between the shore and Smeltania to guide fisherman when nights are dark or stormy.
