MIGHTY MOLARS: Above are shown two mastodon teeth unearthed in a cornfield at the Methodist Old People's Home at Chelsea, along with many other bones of a monster which presumably became mired in a swamp from 5,000 to 10,000 years ago. The larger tooth, measuring seven and one-half by five inches, was struck by a plow while Veirn Combs, employe of the Home, was preparing the field for sowing a crop. This led to the discovery that practically the entire skeleton of a mastodon, in a disjointed state, lay buried in the cornfield. The teeth were well-preserved despite the long lapse of time because of their enamel construction, but the other bones were brittle and crumbled easily when brought to the surface.
