Ann Arbor 1944: There were a few years during World War II when the University of Michigan athletic program had something special going for it. Uncle Sam was its top recruiter. The Navy program at U-M brought some outstanding athletes from other schools and one of them was Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch. Hirsch is shown in this spring 1944 photo laughing at News photographer Eck Stanger for setting up a corny picture to show that the recruit from the University of Wisconsin performed brilliantly in four sports for Michigan. Hirsch's German name means "deer," and he ran like one for Michigan and later in professional football. He is now back at Wisconsin as athletic director and showing progress in making the Badgers competitive.
