Maurice Diamant could hear cannons rumbling as he left Paris when the Germans took over. Had he remained he is confident he would have been placed in a concentration camp. Diamant claims failure to extend the Maginot line far enough was the primary cause of the collapse of France, not betrayal by French officers, although he admits that may have played a part.
