Attorney George J. Burke, jr., here looks over an 1837 court transcript showing that Edward Mundy, first lieutenant-governor of Michigan, was fined five dollars for an assault and battery offense. Holding the transcript is County Clerk Luella M. Smith, in whose office Burke did much of his work in making a study of early crime in Washtenaw county.
