Ann Arbor 1946: Hero home from the wars. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet in World War II, drew an appreciative chuckle from University President Alexander G. Ruthven (left) as he addressed U-M students and townspeople in October 1946. Adm. Nimitz was chief of naval operations when he spoke in Ann Arbor. He later headed the Truman commission on internal security and individual rights. he died in 1966.
