PIONEER RESIDENT CLAIMED BY DEATH

Pastor of Evangelistic Mission Dies at Home of Sister

Ypsilanti, June 16—Rev. Amon W. Shaw of the Evangelistic Mission, 314 North River St., a lifelong resident of Ypsilanti and vicinity, died at 8:30 Wednesday evening at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Matts, 14 East Michigan Ave., following an illness of several months.
Mr. Shaw was born Jan. 29, 1846, on the Lay farm, two miles east of Ypsilanti. On May 1, 1870, he was married to Miss Mary Van Devanter of Ypsilanti, who died Feb. 15, 1879. Three children of this marriage survive: Mrs. Laura Cook, Jacksonville, Fla.; Loren Shaw, 113 River St., and Mrs. Mary Trotter, 14 East Michigan Ave. both of this city.
On Oct. 5, 1882, Mr. Shaw was married to Miss Catherine Furlong of Ypsilanti. Two children were born of this marriage, William , who died at the age of 12 years, and Clarence, who was killed by a Michigan Central train Sept. 7, 1928, as he was walking along the tracks here on his way to work.
Besides the three children of the first marriage, Mr. Shaw is survived by seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Shaw, Calgary, Canada, and Rev. Edwin Shaw, Excelsior, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Kebler, Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Eunice Matts, Ypsilanti.
Mr. Shaw attained the realization of a life-long ambition three years ago when he was ordained as a minister of the Evangelistic Mission, and for several years has been treasurer and a trustee of the mission. For the past three years he has conducted Sunday services each week at the Washtenaw County farm.
He was chaplain of Ypsilanti camp, No. 180, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil war; past commander of the camp; past senior vice commander and past chaplain of the Department of Michigan, Sons of Union Veterans, a state-wide organization.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the J. E. Moore funeral home here, with Rev. Ambrose Johnson, pastor of the Evangelistic Mission, officiating, assisted by Rev. Harvey C. Colburn, pastor of First Congregational church of this city. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Moore funeral home until the hour of service.
