Starts Fund To Assist Orphans

(Special to The Daily News)

Ypsilanti, May 7. ̶ A gift of $100 has been made by a Detroit business man as the nucleus of a fund to aid in the care of the five young children made orphans by the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stockdale, of this city, who were killed instantly the night of April 28 when struck on Michigan Ave. here by an automobile driven by Frederick Cain, Jr., 22, son of the assistant postmaster of Ypsilanti. Another gift of $1 had been made, and it is expected that a considerable sum may be realized through contributions by sympathetic persons who are financially able to aid the family.

The children are Edith, 15; Ethel, 13; Lawrence, 12; Mary, 7; and Doris, 2. They are at present separated, having been taken into the homes of relatives, but it is hoped that they may be maintained in one home providing sufficient funds are secured.

An inquest into the deaths of the parents is scheduled to be held in the city hall here at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Durham, also of this city, injured in the same accident which cost the lives of the Stockdales, are still in a serious condition in Beyer Memorial hospital here, but are expected to recover.
