HAD ARGUMENT, OFFICERS SAY
Mrs. Ida Gimmey, 26, Dies in Hospital Shortly After Noon From Hemmorrhage of Throat; Raymond Gimmey, 24, in Jail
Mrs. Ida Gimmey, 24 years old, 1110 Hutchins Ave. died this afternoon in St. Joseph's Mercy hospital as a result of blows she told police were inflicted upon her by her husband, Raymond Gimmey, 26 years old, during a quarrel today.
Gimmey was placed under arrest by Detective Eugene Gehringer this morning before his wife died and was being questioned by Prosecutor Albert J. Rapp this afternoon on suspicion of having committed manslaughter.
Questioned by Chief Lewis W. Fohey and Sgt. Norman Cook, Gimmey said that "he lost his head" and struck her in the throat, causing a hemmorhage. When Mrs. Gimmey began to choke, a physician was called who had her taken to the hospital early this morning.
Mrs. Gimmey, before she died, Gehringer said, told of coming home from a dance Wednesday night and becoming involved in an argument. After going to bed, Gimmey slapped her several times and then got out of bed and said he was leaving. When she sat up in bed, she said, he struck her in the throat with his fist.
At the police station, Gimmey said that his wife had struck the first blow, slapping him in the face.
Mrs. Gimmey was operated upon by hospital surgeons but the hemorrhage in her throat continued and she died at 12:40 this afternoon. Her husband was by her side at the time of her death.
Apparently the only other persons in the house at the time of the quarrel were Mrs. Gimmey's sister, Mrs. Harold Gimmey, a sister-in-law and a two-year-old son, Raymond, jr. Mrs. Harold Gimmey said that they were quarreling when they went to bed.
The dead woman took in washings to support the family, Gimmey having been out of work for several months.
Prosecutor Albert J. Rapp ordered an autopsy performed on the body this afternoon to discover definitely the cause of death. Coroner Edwin C. Ganzhorn was out of the city and Coroner David Robb of Ypsilanti was called to the hospital.
