Dr. H. A. Adrounie Was Armenian Refugee
Dr. H. A. Adrounie, 53, of Hastings, who was serving his fourth term as coroner of Barry county, died at 6:10 a.m. today in University hospital.
Dr. Adrounie had been ill four weeks and had been a patient here since Feb. 11. Death was attributed to cirrhosis of the liver.
He was born in Turkey in 1882, of Armenian extraction and fled to the United States in 1911 to escape persecution for his part in protecting members of his race who were fellow-students at St. Paul college, Tarus, during the massacres of Armenians by the Turks in 1909. As a student, he carried a message 30 miles through Turkish lines and obtained the intervention of the United States consul for the beleaguered college. As a result, his life was threatened.
He came to the United States, obtained a medical education at the University of Illinois, and had been practicing for 12 years in Hastings when he died. He also was an active Mason.
Dr. Adrounie leaves his widow, who was with him when he died; a son, Harry, 20, and a daughter, Zabelle, 13, both at home. Funeral services will be held in Hastings.
