DEXTER - John R. Devine, who was decorated by two governments during the World war, died this morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Devine, of Dexter, following a lingering illness. He was 44 years old.
An invalid for the past 17 years as a result of injuries received in the war, Mr. Devine had been confined to his bed for the past seven years.
He served overseas with the marine corps from June 3, 1917 until April 17, 1919. He was awarded the citation of "A L'ordie de L'Armie" by the French government, and he was cited for bravery in action by the marine corps.
Born In Ann Arbor
Mr. Devine was born March 25, 1894, in Ann Arbor. He graduated from Dexter High school and Ferris Institute. He was a member of Erwin Prieskorn post of the American Legion of Ann Arbor and the Graf O'Hara post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his parents: a sister, Mrs. Harvey Blanchard, of Dexter; four brothers, Claude, Leo and Louis Devine, all of this village, and Harold Devine, of Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church here, Rev. Charles T. Walsh officiating, and the American Legion will conduct military services at the grave in St. Joseph's cemetery.
