Death Comes To Fred W. Bowen
Prominent Republican Was 88 Years Old
Fred W. Bowen, one of Ann Arbor’s best known citizens and for nearly half a century identified with activities of the Republican party in Washtenaw county, died last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mahler, 521 Detroit St., with whom he had resided recently.
Mr. Bowen, who had been a painter and decorator until his retirement a few years ago, would have been 89 years old on Feb. 12.
Stalwart Republican
Known as the north side’s “Republican stalwart,” Mr. Bowen boasted that his attendance at county Republican conventions as a fifth ward delegate extended over a period of many years, and that he had attended numerous state conventions of his party. When state Republican candidates spoke at a rally previous to the recent election, he sat in the front row. He also accompanied former Gov. Frank D. Fitzgerald on a speaking tour of the country.
He boasted that he had been a Republican as long as any man in Michigan, and he liked to relate that at the age of six he carried a flag in a parade for the first Republican presidential candidate, John C. Fremont, in 1856.
Born In Pennsylvania
Mr. Bowen was born Feb. 12, 1850, in Warren Center, Pa. He came to Ann Arbor about 45 years ago, and the old family home was at 1317 Pontiac St.
In recent years he would spend the winters with his son, W. Korden Bowen, in Dexter. When his son moved to California, he resided for a time with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Bennett of Miller Ave. and later with Mr. and Mrs. Mahler.
Mr. Bowen was a member of the Methodist church and Golden Rule lodge, No. 159, F. & A. M. He was one of those who officiated at the ground-breaking ceremonies for the new First Methodist church.
He is survived by his son and a granddaughter, Jacqueline, both of Palo Alto, Calif.; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Dolph funeral home where friends may call. Rev. Charles Brashares will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery later.
