Democrats Plan Parley Seek Compromise Candidate For State Chairman As Burke Refuses
Efforts were being made here and in Lansing today to get Democratic leaders together before Saturday night's state convention to select a compromise candidate for chairman of the state central committee who will be acceptable to all factions of the state Democratic party.
The meeting was sought because George G. Burke, Ann Arbor attorney and chairman of the State Civil Service Commission who would have been acceptable as a "harmony" candidate, declined to accept the chairmanship.
Changed From Here The outcome of the efforts was still uncertain this afternoon. The meeting first was called for 5 o'clock this afternoon at the Michigan Union here, but then was changed to 2 p.m, at Lansing because Edmund C. Shields, Democratic national committeeman, was unable to come here.
The Lansing meeting then was set over until 10 a.m. tomorrow when State Highway Commission Jer Murray D. Van Wagoner, who appears to be sitting in the driver's seat and is attending the Michigan Highway Conference here, said he would be unable to go to Lansing this afternoon because he is due to speak here tonight.
Whether the meeting, now set, for tomorrow morning at Lansing, will settle the question was doubtful, however, for Van Wagoner said he was going directly to Flint for the state convention tomorrow morning and would not be in Lansing. He said he would be glad to talk politics in Flint with anyone.
The leading candidate for the chairmanship, now held by Edward H. Fry, who wants to retire, is Charles S. Porritt, Pontiac, a member of the State Public Utilities Commission. Porritt, a former employe of the State Highway Department, is backed by Van Wagoner for the chairmanship.
