Illness Fatal to Local Merchant, 70
Martin J. Schaller, 70 years old, who has operated the College Supply shop, 601 E. William St., for the last five years, died early Sunday morning in Dr. Neil Gates' private hospital, after an illness of several months. His home was at 342 E. Madison St.
Mr. Schaller operated a book store on S. Main St. at one time and also was employed for a number of years in Wahr's book store.
Born Jan. 14, 1870, in Nuremburg, Germany, he came to Ann Arbor at the age of 15 years, residing here since. He was married to Miss Bertha Weimann of this city.
He was a member of Golden Rule lodge, No. 159, F. & A. M., Washtenaw chapter, No. 6, R.A.M., Zal Gaz Grotto, No. 34, M.O.V.P. E.R., Ann Arbor commandery, No. 13, Knights Templar, the Moslem Shrine, and Ann Arbor chapter, No. 122, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Clarence A., of Detroit; a daughter, Mrs. Florence Slater of this city; a granddaughter, Joan Slater, of Ann Arbor; two sisters in Germany; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Muehlig chapel, in charge of the Ann Arbor commandery of Knights Templar. Dr. C. W. Brashares will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Members of Ann Arbor commandery are to meet in full uniform at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Masonic temple to attend the services in a body.
