Mary Lee Shop Will Be Moved

Candy Store Will Locate At 332 S. State St.

Remodeling of the store at 332 S. State ST. for occupancy by the Mary Lee Candy Shop early in May is underway, H. D. Backus, president of Mary Lee Candies, Inc., announced today.

The extensive remodeling includes a new store front, redecorating of the interior, new lighting fixtures, new equipment, and paneled walls of knotty pine. Upholstered booths with knotty pine paneling also are planned in the remodeling.

Expansion of the Mary Lee business is planned in the new location, where the firm will continue its candy and semi-restaurant business. The Mary Lee Shop now is on State St. at Liberty St. and will be moved to the new address as soon as the remodeling is completed. Florescent lighting will be used in the candy display cases. 

The new store has a frontage of 22 feet on State St. and extends back 100 feet. It is being leased from Mrs. Edith Nickels. The Mary Lee Candies, Inc., operates stores in Ohio, West Virginia, and Indiana and in the larger cities of Michigan including Jackson, Kalamazoo, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw and Flint.

Mr. Backus, who heads the Mary Lee Candies, is a Michigan graduate, having received his degree here in 1913.

The store at 332 S. State St. has been occupied by the Superior Dairy, which formerly leased the premises.
