14 Washtenaw County Townships Gain ln Population

Total Increase In 20 Political Units Given As 10,360

State Hospital, Federal Prison Jump York Census Figures

Preliminary census figures for townships in Washtenaw county were announced today from the district federal census bureau in Jackson by Miss Inez Drake, assistant supervisor of this census district

All census figures are based on preliminary reports and final totals will be announced later from the census office in Washington.

While population totals for Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti and for the county as a whole have been announced previously, this is the first publication of the individual township figures. Totals for the incorporated communities in the county will be forthcoming from Washington when final reports are released.

14 Townships Gain

The township totals show population gains in 14 of the 20 rural precincts during the last 10 years, while decreases were recorded in six townships. The margin of decrease was small, ranging from five to 181.

Washtenaw county’s 1940 population of 80,634 is an increase of 15,104 during the decade, and the township gains account for 10,360 of this total.

In some of the townships, the gains came largely from developments within the area since 1930. Thus in York township, the Ypsilanti hospital with 3,211 resident patients when the census count was made, and the federal detention home with 751 prisoners, contributes to the jump in population from 2,468 in 1930 to 6,935 in 1940.

Totals Include Villages

York’s population figure includes that part of Milan which is in Washtenaw county. Chelsea's population is included in Lima and Sylvan townships, Manchester village in Manchester township, Dexter village in Scio township, and Saline city in Saline township.
