RETIRED PASTOR TAKEN BY DEATH Rev. Hartmann Bau Dies At His Home Rev. Hartmann Bau, former pastor of the West Side Methodist church who retired in 1918 after 35 years in the ministry, died yesterday morning at his home, 813 E. Ann St., after a year’s illness. He was 77 years old. Rev. Mr. Bau was pastor of the West Side Methodist church from 1915 to 1918, when he retired because of failing health. He had made his home here since, except for one year when he served in Francisco, Mich., as a supply pastor. He and Mrs. Bau observed their 53rd wedding anniversary last Sept. 14. Formerly At Saginaw Before coming to Ann Arbor, Rev. Mr. Bau was at Saginaw for six years, building the new Toscola Ave. Methodist church during his service there. He previously held pastorates in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Born in Schoenstfdt in the provence of Kur Hessen, Germany, May 11, 1863, the son of Heinrich and Katherine Richeliu Bau, Mr. Bau came to the United States at the age of 16, taking up residence in Baltimore, Md. In 1883 he entered German Wallace College, now Baldwin Wallace College at Berea, O., to study for the ministry. He was ordained a deacon in the Central German Conference of the Methodist church in 1892 and two years later was ordained as an elder. The German conference later was absorbed into the English speaking conferences of the Methodist church. Before going to Saginaw, Rev. Mr. Bau held pastorates at McKeesport, Pa.; White Creek, Ind.; Bradford, Ind.; where he built a new church; Golconda, Ill.; Gordonville, Mo.; Mt. Olive, Ill.; Huntingburg, Ind.; and Spencerville, O. Married In 1888 He married Pauline Mueller, a native of Reichenbach, Saxony, Germany, in Baltimore on Sept. 14, 1888. They had four children, Mrs. George Borgert, registrar in the probate court here; Mrs. Fred J. Wolfe, Detroit; Wesley Bau, Ann Arbor; and Mrs. George Nothdurft, who died seven years ago. Besides the widow, one son and two daughters, he is survived by seven grandchildren, Rev. Milton Nothdruft, Marble Rock, Ia.; Rev. Donald Nothdruft, East St. Louis, Mo.; Harold Nothdruft, Earlville, Ia.; Betty Lou Bau, Ann Arbor; Barbara Jane Borgert, Ann Arbor; and Kenneth and Velma Wolfe, Detroit. His son-in-law, Rev. George Nothdruft, is endowment officer for Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa. Funeral services will be held at the Dolph funeral home at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, with Rev. Charles Brashares officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Dolph funeral home. PHOTO CAPTION: Minister Dies: Rev.
