Ann Arbor Leads Nation In Buying Stamps, Bonds

City Has Best Per Capita Record With Average Of $39.77

Ann Arbor leads all other cities in the United States in the. per capita purchase of defense savings stamps and bonds.

1 The announcement of this unusual record by Frank N. Isbey. Detroit, executive chairman of the Michigan Defense Savings Committee, reported that since May 1 residents and business firms of Ann Arbor have bought $1,193,013 worth of the bonds and stamps.

This is an average of $39.77 for every man, woman and child in the city.

Mr. Isbey attributed the record contribution to payroll deduction plans in Ann Arbor factories and to "unusual co-operation by merchants and businessmen.”

Commenting upon Ann Arbor’s fine showing in the campaign to raise funds to finance the nation’s defense program, Reardon Peirsol, executive chairman of the local committee, said it was the result of wholehearted, community-wide support.

He paid special tribute to the local committee, the city’s banks and financial institutions, the post office, the local unions, retailer merchants, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the public. Catholic and University schools, and the girls who sold the stamps during stamp day.

Mr. Peirsol also praised the co-operation of manufacturers for their purchase of bonds and for introducing a system of payroll; deductions for employee purchases.
