W. F. Whittemore Dies In Hospital

Father Of Professor Ill For Two Weeks

William Franklin Whittemore, 3010 Geddes Ave., a grandson of a member of the University’s first board of regents and father of Prof. Harlow O. Whittemore, died in University hospital last night. He was 81 years old and had been ill for two weeks.

Mr. Whittemore had resided in Ann Arbor 27 years, working at the University storehouse for 10 years until retiring at the age of 70. He previously lived at Owosso for six years, moving there from Tawas City where he was in the banking business for many years. He also held several county offices, including that of treasurer, at Tawas City.

Born in Ovid, Mich., June 7, 1860, he was a son of James Olin and Mellissa S. Whittemore. His father was a University graduate in 1847. His grandfather, Gideon Olin Whittemore, was a University regent in 1837-38, serving on the board which picked the Ann Arbor campus. His grandfather also was secretary of state and on the state board of agriculture which established Michigan State College.

He was a member of Ann Arbor lodge, F. & A.M., and of the First Congregational church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Jessie Lyon, whom he married in August, 1885; a daughter, Mrs. John A. Miller, Ann Arbor; two sons, Prof. Harlow O. Whittemore, chairman of the University's department of landscape architecture; and Douglas M. Whittemore, head of the Spanish department at Menlo College, Palo Alto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Dolph funeral home, with Dr. Leonard A. Parr officiating. Burial will be in Washtenong Memorial cemetery.
