Al Wistert To Make Debut As Varsity Matman
Al Wistert, Michigan’s giant tackle, is expected to make his debut as a Wolverine wrestler tonight when the Michigan matmen engage Nebraska in a dual meet at the Yost field house, following the conclusion of the Michigan-Indiana basketball game.
Wistert today still had to go through the formality of registering for the second semester, but if he fulfilled this requirement he will be Michigan's heavyweight grappler tonight.
If his bout with his opponent should become too timid, Al can assume his football crouch and call signals, because Herb Jackman, the Nebraska heavyweight, also is a football tackle.
Another Nebraska gridder, Nick Douvas at 175 pounds also is a Cornhusker gridman. He will wrestle Capt. Jim Galles of the Wolverines.
The feature bout of the program, however, will bring together Newt Copple of Nebraska and Manley Johnson of Michigan at the 145-pound weight. Newt, a junior, is undefeated in two years of competition in the Big Six conference. Johnson, a transfer from that hotbed of wrestling—Oklahoma A. & M.—will be making his first Michigan appearance.
A brother of Newt, Ed Copple, will tackle either Marvin Becker or Herb Barnett in the 155-pound
Dick Koepl at 121, Morrie Anderson at 128, Ray Deane at 136 and Bill Courtright at 165, will comprise the remainder of the Michigan battlefront.
