William H. Kress, proprietor of the Kress Art and Gift Shop here for many years prior to his retirement in 1926, died last night at his home, 742 Gott St., following a long illness. He was 73 years old.
He was born Aug. 10, 1870, in Lodi township and was the son of John and Monica Hauser Kress. Mr. Kress had been a resident of Ann Arbor the past 28 years.
Before establishing himself in business here, Mr. Kress had operated a jewelry store at Elk Rapids and had also been an an optometrist in Cheboygan.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic church and of the Holy Name Society of the church.
On Nov. 26, 1898, he was married to Mary M. Collins, Traverse City.
Survivors include the wife, a son, Rev. J. Joseph Kress, of St. Mary's Catholic church, Royal Oak; a sister, Sister M. Monica, O. P. Marywood, Grand Rapids, and a brother, Simon J. Kress, Ann Arbor.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Thomas church. Mr. Kress' son, Rev. Mr. Kress, will be the celebrant of the Solemn Requiem mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas cemetery. Friends may call at the Muehlig funeral chapel where the Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock Sunday night.
