Albert W. Merz, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Merz of Manchester, received his pilot wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force after graduating from advanced flying school at Marianna, Fla., last week.
Enlisting last May, Lt. Merz was called up in October as an aviation cadet and was sent directly to the classification center at Nashville, Tenn., where he was chosen as potential pilot material.
After receiving primary flying training at Maxwell Field, Ala., he reported to Marianna, Fla., for a two months course in single engine flying tactics and operation.
Graduating from Manchester High school and Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti, Lt. Merz was employed as an auditor for International Harvester Co. at Jackson until his enlistment.
