40 YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE For 40 years the name ARNET has been synonymous with monuments in this community. From a small one-room building that contained office, show-room and work-room without division of any kind, the firm has grown through successive stages to its present size, the only complete modernly equipped monumental plant in the state. 1904. The first Arnet monument shop located at 105 East Ann Street 1924. Immediately below, these three pictures are of the second location at 208 West Huron Street The present owner of the firm, Fred L. Arnet, graduate of the University School of Architecture, is the fourth generation in the family to be active in the monument business. Mr. Lawrence Arnet started his career as a stone carver in Bohemia, followed by his son Wenzel. Wenzel's son, Joseph L. Arnet, soon learned his father's trade and at the age of 17 was an expert stone carver, foreman of a monument works in Flint, Michigan. Joe Arnet left the Flint shop and came to Ann Arbor in the year 1904 to open his own monument works, at 105 East Ann Street. The shop was moved on several occasions, when the expanding business demanded larger quarters. For 14 years the firm was located at 208 West Huron Street. During the year 1919 new equipment was installed here in order that demands for interior and exterior cut stone and marble could be satisfied. This triple combination of memorials, cut stone and interior marble so increased business that new quarters again became necessary. Hence came about the erection of the present Memorial Studio at 924-36 North Main Street, site of the old Ann Arbor City Mills. Modernly equipped and carrying the largest single standing stock of memorials in Michigan, Arnet's now have exclusive agency in Washtenaw County for the famous Cold Spring granites, Mottled Venetian granite, Berkeley granite and all Vermont marbles, as well as genuine patented Lithichrome lettering and Lithi-picture. 1944.
