Ruthven, Dancy To Speak At Dunbar Center Ceremonies

Dr. Alexander G. Ruthven, president of the University, and John C. Dancy, executive director of the Detroit Urban League, will be the principal speakers at the Dunbar Civic Center mortgage burning ceremonies to be held promptly at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Center, on N. Fourth Ave.

Rev. Henry Lewis of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will give the invocation. James T. Overbey will read the history of the Center, prepared by Charles S. Cromwell, after which Mrs. Geraldine Huey will sing "Lord's Prayer," accompanied by Mrs. Virginia Wilson Ellis.

The Dunbar Quintet and Chorus, both directed and accompanied by Mrs. Ellis, will sing several numbers, and Prof. J. Raleigh Nelson, member of the advisory board, will present an award of merit to Miss Ada B. Hill. Lena Wayner, president of the board of directors, and Lewis C. Reimann, chairman of the advisory board, will take part in the burning of the mortgage.

"God Bless America," sung by the chorus and Mrs. Huey, followed by the Benediction, given by Rev. C.W. Carpenter, president of the Ann Arbor Ministerial Association, will conclude the program. Refreshments will then be served and the Center will be open for public inspection.

The program will be held out-of-doors over a public address system. In case of inclement weather, however, it will be held in Pattengill Auditorium. The streets adjacent to the Center will be closed off shortly before the program until 6 o'clock. Cars may be parked in the City Market on Detroit St., a block from the Center. Boy Scouts and Girl Reserves will act as ushers.

The Dunbar Quintet, directed by Mrs. Ellis, and composed of Hortense Bacon, Theodosia Lee, Arlena Scott, Edith McFadden and Colene Bacon, will sing four spirituals in a broadcast over WJR from Morris hall between 9:15 and 9:45 tomorrow morning. They will sing “My Lord What a Morning,” "I Thank God, Free at Last," “Heaven, Heaven," and "By and By."

This solemn little lad, listening intently to plans for the Dunbar celebration, is John Charles Morton, who will be two years old in June. (Other pictures on page 14.)
