Ypsilanti Man Dies In France Sgt. Lawrence Stockdale Killed In Action YPSILANTI – Staff Sgt. Lawrence C. Stockdale, 22, of 816 Ann St., this city, was killed in action Aug. 30, in France, according to a message received by his wife, Wilma. Last week Mrs. Stockdale had received a message saying that her husband was missing in action on Aug. 30. Sgt. Stockdale was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Charlotte, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Stockdale, who were both killed April 28, 1934, when struck by an automobile as they were walking across Michigan Ave., near River St., this city. The family came here soon after Lawrence’s birth. He attended the local schools and was employed at the Ford bomber plant until his enlistment on Jan. 14, 1944. He was a member of the infantry, receiving his training at Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he first reported for duty, and at Camp Wheeler, Ga. He was sent overseas last June. Shortly before going overseas he was home for a 14-day furlough, and after arriving in Europe he was stationed first in England, then in France, then back in England, and then in France again. His promotion to staff sgt. Was received some time in August. His wife is the former Wilma Green, of this city, whom he married Aug. 2, 1941, and he also leaves a daughter, Sandra Marie, 18 months old. He has four sisters, Mrs. William Cummings, Ypsilanti; Mrs. Roy Baken, Jacksonville, Fla.; Miss Doris Stockdale, Sheldon; and Miss Mary Ward, Bronson. The latter was adopted by a family by the name of Ward after the death of her parents.
