400 ‘U' Students Represent 42 Foreign Countries Will Be Honored At Reception Given By International Center Newly-compiled figures indicate that approximately 400 foreign students from 42 countries are enrolled on the University of Michigan campus this summer. They will be honored at a reception given for them tonight by the staff and board of governors of the International Center. Registration cards are in for 276 non-citizens and 51 U. S. citizens. In addition there are more than 50 Latin American students in the English Language Institute, and the directors of the Center indicated yesterday that there are 50100 more students whose cards have not come through as yet. Michigan Fourth Highest As of last November, the University, with more than 500 enrolled, was a close second to New York University on the list of collegiate institutions with a foreign student population. The state of Michigan rated the fourth highest foreign student group, preceded by New York, Massachusetts, and California. On a regional basis, the 20 Latin American republics represented the largest mass group, with 137. The T6 students from China give it the largest single-country rating, as has been true since 1933 when records were begun with the exception of one year when Canada went ahead, IC officials said. Turkey, with 37, rates second, Brazil third with 25, and Canada, with 23, ties with the U. S. Oriantal group. Twenty students have come from Puerto Rico, 17 from India, and 11 from the Philippine Islands. Six other countries have more than five students here: Germany, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Peru. Fifteen other countries, exclusive of the Latin American republics, are represented: Austria, Cyprus, France, Great Britain, Estonia, Iceland, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland. Receiving Lines In the receiving line at the reception from 8 to 11 o'clock tonight at the Rackham Assembly Hall will be Miss Alice B. Lloyd, dean of women; Dr. Peter Okkelberg, assistant dean of the graduate school, and Mrs. Okkelberg, Dr. George E. Carrothers, director of the bureau of co-operation with educational Institutions; Prof. Martha Colby, Miss Ethel McCormick, social director of the Michigan League; Dr. Esson M. Gale, counselor of foreign students and director of the International Center, and Mrs. Gale, and Robert Klinger, assistant counselor of foreign students, and Mrs. Klinger. Refreshments will be served by Mrs. Rafaelita H. Soriano, Philippine Commonwealth; Mrs. Ansuya Joshi and Miss Mercy Cornelius, India; Miss Blanca Alvarez, Venezuela; Mrs. Rosa de Llombart, Puerto Rico; Mrs. Carlos A. Jaramillo, sr., Peru, and Miss Eugenia Chen and Miss Bei-tsung Li, China. Invitations have been sent to all persons known to be interested in foreign students and to the students themselves. Others interested in foreign students may attend, the host group has announced.
