Local Sculptor Executes Statue Depicting Christ

"One World,” a statue of Christ holding the world in his hands and designed to symbolize the spirit of Christ as a means of promoting world unity, was recently completed by Mrs. Agnes McLean, 2025 Seneca, for the grounds of the Methodist Home for Old people in Chelsea.

The statue, together with "Pan,” which Mrs. McLean sculptured for the Interlochen Music Camp, will be sent to New York to be cast in bronze.

Mrs. McLean is a pupil of Prof. Avard Fairbanks at the University Institute of Fine Arts. She first began to do sculpture when enrolling in a course with Prof. Avard Fairbanks six years ago. Since then she has studied at the University Institute of Fine Arts and through the University extension service under Prof. Fairbanks.

Besides “Pan” and "One World,” she has done a number of fountain studies, including “Judy” and “Sisters,” several statues of her grandchildren, and numerous statuettes.

“One World” was modeled in water clay and then cast in plaster. The plaster model will be sent to New York. At the Methodist Home it will be mounted on rainbow granite, the rainbow color symbolizing the Biblical promise of hope and a brighter day. A 20-foot pool with running water, symbolizing the “well of water springing up into everlasting life” will be built directly in front of the statue.
