AWARD FOR SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE: FOUR-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP WON BY MARTHA WELLS

Miss Martha Wells, one of two Michigan winners of four-year college scholarships awarded on the basis of scholastic aptitude, left this morning for New York City, where she will spend a week with friends before registering at Swarthmore College, Pa.
Miss Wells is the daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Carlton F. Wells of 8 Harvard Pl. Her mother is traveling with her to New York and will visit in Swarthmore before returning here,
In addition to paying for year’s tuition at any accredited college in the United States, the scholarship, awarded by the Pepsi-Cola Co., provides $25 each month toward living expenses and an allowance for a roundtrip each college year from home to college. The scholarship students also may receive a post-graduate fellowship of $1,500 annually for three or four years.
Twelve students selected from various schools after competing in scholastic aptitude tests were in competition for the two scholarships awarded in the state. Miss Wells was one of 15 selected from Ann Arbor High School as candidates.
In addition to an outstanding academic record while attending high school here, Miss Wells was co-editor of the high school yearbook, Omega, secretary and vice-president of the French club, vice-president of the Science club, and president of the war projects committee.
She also was a member of the a cappela choir and the student council and served as piano accompanist and cellist with the high school orchestra.
