Mrs. Twining Dies In Hospital At Age Of 44
Was Known To Hundreds As Al-Gon-Quian Camp Mother
Mrs. Ruth May Twining, 44, wife of Herbert H. Twining, 1601 Cambridge Rd., died yesterday afternoon at St. Joseph's Mercy hospital following a three-month illness.
Mrs. Twining was born May 22, 1902, in Ann Arbor while her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Harry E. King, were on furlough from their work at Peking University, Peking (now known as Peiping), China. She was taken to China when a few months old and her childhood was spent in Peking.
Mrs. Twining was graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1919 and from the University in 1923. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Shortly after her graduation she was married to Herbert H. Twining.
The Twinings spent their summers at Camp Al-gon-quian at Burt Lake in northern Michigan, which they operated and where Mrs. Twining became known to hundreds of boys as camp mother during the last 22 years. She was a member of the First Methodist church.
Surviving are Mr. Twining; four sons, Robert, Richard, Herbert jr., and William; two daughters, Ruth jean and Margaret Ann; a brother, Gilbert King of Los Angeles, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Louis E. Wolferz of Yenching University, Peking, China.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the First Methodist church, Dr. James Brett Kenna and Rev. Robert H. Jongeward officiating. Interment will be at the Washtenong Memorial Park.
