Douglas Williams Completes 10 Years Of Service Here
Douglas E. H. Williams, executive secretary of Dunbar Community Center, will be honored Sunday afternoon at a reception given by the board of the community association to commemorate his tenth year as secretary at the center.
Educated at Wilberforce and Howard Universities and the Atlanta School of Social Work. Mr. Williams came to Ann Arbor in December of 1936. He had previously served as a supervisor of a youth guidance center at Atlanta under the National Youth Administration.
The Dunbar Community center was founded in 1923 by Rev. R. M. Gilbert to provide a gathering place for the colored people of the community and their various recreational and civic activities. The center is named for the late Paul Lawrence Dunbar, famous Negro poet and member of the staff of the Congressional library in Washington.
Since Mr. Williams took over the duties of executive secretary in January of 1937 the membership at the center climbed from 65 to over 400. In addition to his duties with the center, Mr. Williams has been active in several national social service organizations, and civic movements. He is a member of the Ann Arbor Board of Education.
The reception Sunday is being arranged by the board of directors of Dunbar, headed by James T. Overbey, jr., president. Board members aiding in planning for the affair include Mrs. Herman H. Hill, Miss Theolia Cromwell, Mrs. Jessie Evans, Lloyd Miller, Walter Harrison, Vergil Huey and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cooper.
Tea will be served by members of the house committee under the chairmanship of Mrs. Evans. The reception will be held from 3 to 6 at Dunbar Center.
