Illness Fatal To Past C. of C. President And Police Commissioner
George W. Kyer, well-known Ann Arbor businessman and former co-owner of the Kyer Laundry Co., died yesterday morning in University hospital at the age of 69. In ill health for the past four months, he had entered the hospital last Tuesday.
A life-long resident of Ann Arbor, Mr. Kyer served two three-year terms as a member of the city police commission, 1933 to 1939. Also a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, he served two terms of three years each on the chamber's board of directors and as head of the organization in 1942.
Mr. Kyer was born in Ann Arbor on Oct. 4, 1877, a son of Nelson J. and Maren A. Wiuff Kyer, and married Ida K. Buss of Ann Arbor on Sept. 9, 1903. From 1903 to 1924 he was in the tailoring and haberdashery business on N. University Ave.
Began Laundry In 1924
In 1924, in partnership with Sidney J. Paup, he opened the Kyer Laundry, and was active in the firm until selling out his interests to Mr. Paup in September of 1945, when he retired.
Mr. Kyer was a member of the Presbyterian church, a past exalted ruler of the Elks and a past master of Golden Rule lodge, 159, F. & A. M.
Besides his wife, Mr. Kyer leaves a daughter, Mrs. Stanley H. Fulton of Birmingham; two granddaughters, Mary and Ann Fulton; and two sisters, Mrs. H. W. Harrison of Kingston, N. Y., and Mrs. George F. Thompson of Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Muehlig chapel, Dr. William P. Lemon officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at Muehlig's.
