Five Injured In Car Crash

George, Luella Smith Hurt; Housekeeper In Serious Condition

Mrs. Edith Hendershott, 60, housekeeper for the George P. Smiths, of 221 Buena Vista Ave., suffered a fractured skull and was still unconscious at noon today after the Smiths’ car, in which she was a passenger, collided with another automobile at US-12 and M-92, near Chelsea.

Four other persons, including Smith, county sealer of weights and measures and his wife, County Clerk Luella M Smith, suffered less serious injuries in the accident, which occurred about 6:15 last night.

Mrs. Hendershott was riding west on US-12 with her employers when the collision took place. The three were on their way to visit Smith’s mother in Sylvan Center. Smith was driving.

The other automobile was being driven south on M-92 by William H. McAtee, 55, of Grass Lake, according to sheriff’s deputies, and the collision occurred at the intersection of the two roads, near Lake Brothers’ garage.

Smith received right knee bruises. His wife suffered a bruised right leg and a cracked rib. McAtee received a bruised left elbow and his daughter, Billie Mae, 14, suffered bruises on the left side of the head.

All five injured persons were taken to St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital. All but Mrs. Hendershott was released after treatment.
