John J. Gutekunst, 69, Former Spanish War Vet Commander, Dies
JOHN J. GUTEKUNST, 69, FORMER SPANISH WAR VET COMMANDER, DIES
John Jacob Gutekunst, 69, former Spanish war veteran and commander for several years of the Rose-Granger Camp of Spanish-American War Veterans, died early this morning at his home, 412 N. Division St. He had been ill about six months.
Born Dec. 28, 1877, in Wuerttemberg, Germany, Mr. Gutekunst came to the United States at the age of five with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gutekunst. He was married Nov. 15, 1898, to Emma Koch.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the church brotherhood.
Two sisters of Mr. Gutekunst, both of whom lived in Ann Arbor, preceded him in death. They were Mrs. John Kranich and Mrs. Fred Schleicher.
Survivors are Mr. Gutekunst’s wife, Emma; one son, Oliver J.; a brother, Gottlob; and two sisters, Mrs. William Kempfert and Mrs. Nelson Hoppe, all of Ann Arbor. A granddaughter also survives.
Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon in the Muehlig Chapel, with Rev. E. C. Stellhorn officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel.
