WCTU Group Named In Her Honor
Mrs. Mary Jewett Taft, for whom the Mary J. Taft group of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was named, died this morning at her home, 431 Thompson St., after a long illness. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Taft had been active in a number of Ann Arbor organizations since coming here over 40 years ago. For 30 years she served as president of the WCTU here and it was upon her retirement eight years ago that the union was named in her honor.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Taft was serving as president of the Grandmothers Club.
Born July 27, 1854, in Peterborough, N. H., she was married on May 11, 1875, to John H. Taft, who died in November of 1899. The family lived in Ohio and in 1900 Mrs. Taft moved to Ann Arbor to educate her children.
Mrs. Taft was the oldest living member of the First Congregational Church. She also was a member of the Congregational Circle of King's Daughters and of the Congregational Women's Society.
Surviving are two sons, A. J. Taft and H. C. Taft. lawyers in Oklahoma City; a daughter, Mary L. Taft of Evanston, Ill.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Taft had been ill since March of this year.
The body was taken to the Dolph Funeral home. Funeral arrangements will be announced. later.
