Bump Elliott Disappointed Over Ruling

Chalmers “Bump" Elliott is keenly disappointed over the action taken by the faculty representatives Saturday when they voted to deny him another season of football competition at the University of Michigan.

“Naturally I am disappointed,” said Bump, “because I had my heart set on another season with Michigan in football.”

Asked about reports that he was considering a contract with the Detroit professional Lions for next season, Elliott replied: “I am not even going to think about playing professional football until after the school year is over. You know I want to play baseball for Michigan this spring and will not make any decisions on pro football until the baseball season is over.”

The election of Michigan’s football captain for next year had been held up until the Elliott case was disposed of. Coach Fritz Crisler was philosophical about the decision. "The matter was entirely out of my hands. Naturally I would have liked to have had Bump for another season. But we’ll field a team just the same and play our 1948 schedule.”

Prof. Ralph W. Aigler, Michigan’s representative on the Big Nine faculty committee, termed the ruling as a “grave injustice.” “It was grave injustice to a fine young man” in denial to a veteran of "privileges and benefits” which he would have received had he not entered the service, said Aigler.

Bump was playing basketball with the Jay-Vee team against Ohio State in the field house Saturday afternoon when the announcement of the Big Nine ruling was received from Chicago.
