In 1923 he became managing editor of The Ann Arbor News, then known as The Times-News, serving in that capacity for 11 years, after which be became associate editor.

A citation honoring Baker was read at the Alumni Luncheon by Wilfred B. Shaw, director of alumni relations.

“Throughout a long career in journalism as reporter, editor and special writer, R. Ray Baker has proved himself a staunch and discerning friend of the University of Michigan," the citation declared.

“In his almost daily chronicles of scientific progress and research, he has brought recognition to the University throughout the state and nation,” the citation continued. “Long and intimate association with faculty, students, and alumni has made for him a real place in the great Michigan fellowship.

“Today we publicly recognize his outstanding service in conferring upon him the status of honorary alumnus of the University of Michigan with all its accompanying associations and privileges."
