Body Of Paul Henes, Dexter War Hero, Will Be Reburied

DEXTER—The body of Pvt. Paul D. Henes, war hero, killed in action in Italy in 1945, will be returned to Dexter Wednesday for reburial services.
Pvt. Henes was born Sept. 28, 1925, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henes, 7951 Fourth St., Dexter. He attended Dexter schools and was a member of St. Andrew’s Evangelical and Reformed Church.
He entered service in March, 1943, receiving training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., and at other camps in Tennessee and South Carolina.
Pvt. Henes went overseas from Fort Meade, Maryland, in September, 1944, and served in England for a short time before being sent to Italy with the 349th Regiment of the 88th (Blue Devil) Division.
The Army reported him missing in action on Jan. 7, 1945, after the commanding officer of his combat patrol unit became wounded and lost. Pvt. Henes volunteered to lead a rescue party and was last seen under heavy machine gun fire.
Pvt. Henes was officially declared dead on Nov. 17, 1946. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
Surviving besides his parents are six brothers, Lawrence, Kenneth, Stanley, Ellsworth, Marvin, and Frederick, all of Dexter.
Reburial services will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon from the St. Andrew’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Dexter, with Rev. Hebert Schowe officiating.
Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Ann Arbor, where special graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 557 of Dexter.
Friends may call at the Carl Keehn Funeral Home in Dexter from 8 o’clock Wednesday evening until noon Thursday.
