Police Break Up Student Parade

An impromptu parade conducted by University students protesting a University Lecture Committee ban of a Communist speaker from the campus was broken up by police yesterday noon when the demonstration left the campus area.

The group of some 15 to 18 students was told by officers that they were violating a city ordinance by staging a parade without a permit.

The demonstrators disbanded, and no action was taken by local police.

About noon, the paraders began their march, bearing placards and a black crepe casket, in the center of the campus where publicity stunts for the Michigras carnival were in progress.

Because of the competition, they moved off the campus and were walking down S. University Ave. near Forest Ave. when police intervened.

Meanwhile, no official action was taken by University officials on a demand by the Student Legislature for an investigation of regulations relating to campus speakers. President Alexander G. Ruthven, who was asked to set up an investigating committee, is out of the city, and any action taken will have to await his return.
