Powrie Named Principal At Jones School

Ashley Clague Reelected President By Board Of Education Members

Emerson F. Powrie was named principal of Jones School last night by the Board of Education.

Ashley H. Clague was unanimously reelected to another term as president of the board at the meeting. Clague also served as board president during the 1945-46 school year.

In other unanimous action, Board members elected Douglas Williams as secretary and George Balas as recording secretary and treasurer.

Three Take Oath

Earlier Clague, Mrs. Reed M. Nesbit, and George Schlect, all of whom were reelected to the board last month, took the oath of office.

He will fill the post vacated last month by the transfer of Gene Maybee to the principalship of Tappan Junior High School. Maybee succeeded Henry Dykema, who asked to be released from the Tappan faculty so he could complete work for a doctorate at the University.

Powrie has been principal of the Adult Education Evening School and director of driver training activities.

A native of Bay City and a graduate of the University, where he received both his BA and MA degrees, Powrie has been a member of the public schools’ staff for five years. His first assignment in Ann Arbor was at Slauson Junior High School.

Taught In Flint

Before coming here he taught in the Flint schools.

Jones School will continue as a combined elementary and junior high school for at least one year. Then it is scheduled to be used for elementary school classes only.

Board members, in appointing Powrie to the principalship, said the advancement was in recognition of his service to the public schools. They voiced praise for his “fine job in adult education and the driver training program.”
