Illness Fatal To Daniel Campbell
Was Founder Of Kansas Highway Department
EAST ANN ARBOR —Daniel F. Campbell, 87. founder of the Kansas State Highway Department died last night at his home. 3930 Platt Rd.
It was during his tenure as a member of the Kansas State Legislature where he held a seat in 1890 that Mr. Campbell introduced the state's first program of organized highway improvement.
He died last night, in the home where he was born, following a long illness.
Member Of Dawes Group
Mr. Campbell achieved national prominence as a member of the Dawes Commission on Indian Affairs for the Oklahoma Territory.
Born Oct. 15. 1864, Mr. Campbell was graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1881 and from the University Law School three years later.
He opened law offices at Fort Scott, Kas., that same year.
In 1912. Mr. Campbell returned to the home of his birth, and served as road commissioner for Pittsfield township until that function was taken over by the County Road Commission.
Survived By Wife
He is survived by his wife, the former Adelle Adams, and a son, Andrew Campbell, both at home; a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Chipman of Ypsilanti; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. '
Also surviving are a brother. J. A. Campbell of Oneida. Ill., and a sister. Mrs. Anna Covell of Wakefield, Mass. A son, John, died in 1929.
Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Geer Funeral Home at Ypsilanti.
