Cardinal Mooney Will Dedicate New Seminary

Other Clergy To Assist In Holy Ghost Fathers’ Ceremony Wednesday

His Eminence Edward Cardinal Mooney of Detroit will officiate at the solemn blessing and dedication of the Holy Ghost Fathers Seminary at 4133 Washtenaw Rd. at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The $500,000 seminary, built on the former Francis J. LaPointe property, is now complete except’ for landscaping.

Already 48 young men are preparing for the priesthood there. Enrollment is expected to reach about 100 eventually, Rev. Dayton D. Kirby, director, said.

Very Rev. Richard Ackerman, C. S. Sp., of Pittsburgh, national director of the Pontificial Society of Holy Childhood, will deliver the dedication sermon at Wednesday’s ceremony.

Others To Assist

Other clergymen assisting with the services will be Very Rev. Francis H. McGlynn, C. S. Sp., provincial superior of the Holy Ghost Fathers in the United States; Very Rev. Regis C. Guthrie, C. S. Sp., of Washington, D. C., Very Rev. George J. Collins, C. S. Sp., of Cornwell Heights, Pa.; and Rev. Joseph Breitenbeck, secretary to Cardinal Mooney.

At least 70 members of the archdiocesan clergy are expected to attend the ceremony and the dinner following.

While the buildings were nearly complete at the cornerstone laying and blessing of the chapel last April, visitors this time will see added touches of art work.

Emblem Added

A gold-plated bronze emblem of the order has been placed on the school facade. The emblem was done by Marshall Fredericks of Birmingham, who did the war memorial eagle statue at the University Stadium.

The chapel is now furnished with a cross and Stations of the Cross done in contemporary style, by Sister Helene, O. P. of Siena Heights College, Adrian.

The fresco behind the chapel altar, representative of the Holy Ghost, which was already installed, last spring, was done by Melville Steinfels of Chicago. Steinfels used the technique of the old Italian artists in building up the design with plaster and painting it while still wet.

The entire seminary was designed by architect Charles D. Hannan of Farmington. Contractor was Henry deKoning of Ann Arbor.
