Committee Plans LaCoe Memorial

Late Civic Leader Will Be Honored

A committee of local citizen has been formed to establish a memorial in honor of the late Wendell J. LaCoe, local civic leader, who died as the result of an automobile accident Nov. 20 in the Upper Peninsula.

The Rev. Edwin J. Weiss has been named chairman of the 11-man committee, composed of representatives of local organizations, in many of which Mr. LaCoe was active.

Because of Mr. LaCoe's long identification with the Young Men’s Christian Association, the committee decided yesterday to establish the memorial in connection with the proposed new YMCA building.

Mr. LaCoe was a past-president of the Y's board of directors. He also was a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club and a former campaign chairman for the Community Chest. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the budget committee of the chest.

The committee is composed of Richard J. Wander of the JCC; N. J. Prakken of the Community Chest; C. W. Markham of the Lions | Club, Thomas H. Green, Optimist Club; and J. Gordon McDonald, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce.

Others are S. D. (Casey) Jones, YMCA; Mayor William E. Brown, jr.; J. Robert Marker, Exchange Club; Leonard A. Tappe, Ann Arbor Trust Co.; and Murray D. Wanty, Kiwanis Club.

Tappe is the treasurer of the memorial fund, and contributions may be sent to him. Checks should be made out to "Wendell J. LaCoe YMCA Memorial Project.”
