New Ypsilanti Church To Open

Free Methodists Erect

$70,000 Stone Building

YPSILANTI—The Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church plans its first services in its new $70,000 building now nearing completion at Oak and Charles Sts. Sunday, Feb. 21.

Dedication will be postponed until May.

The old church at 758 Lowell St., where the church has been located for the past 50 years, has been sold to the Southern Baptists.

The new church of Bedford, Indiana limestone is in semi-colonial design, with two entrances, one toward the street and another toward the parking lot. The building site is made up of three lots.

The church auditorium is designed to seat up to 350, and 17 basement Sunday school classrooms are planned to accommodate 500. The rooms are divided by folding doors that can be pushed back to make an assembly hall.

A pastor’s study with a separate outside door is located near the pulpit.

The new building will allow plenty of space for the present 65-member congregation and 150-member church school as well as room for future expansion

Members of the congregation spent evenings, Saturdays and days off helping with the construction, including digging trenches, tarring foundation walls, painting and laying floor tile, the Rev. M.’E. Andrews, pastor, said.

Including the proceeds of sale of the old church, they have raised all but $15,000 now covered by a bank loan.

The pastor’s opening sermon at the 11 a.m. services Feb. 21 will be “What Hath God Wrought?’’ In! addition, the opening will be celebrated in the church school, under Supt. Clarence Chambers, and at the evening evangelistic service.

The evening service will begin at 7:30 with the youth group in charge. At 8 p.m. the pastor will conduct the service.
