School Named For Otto W. Haisley

Retired Superintendent Honored For Service

The new northwest elementary school now under construction just west of Duncan St. between Miller and Dexter Aves. was officially named Otto W. Haisley Elementary School last night by the Board of Education.

In selecting that name, the board is honoring its retired superintendent who served the school system for nearly 30 years. Haisley began his retirement furlough last July.

The board asked earlier that interested citizens send in their suggestions for naming the school. Six letters were sent with Haisley’s name recommended “as strongly as any received,” Board president Donald L. Katz said.

Other Names Suggested

Other names suggested were Mrs. Mabel W. Nesbit Elementary School, in honor of Mrs. Nesbit who has been serving on the board since 1943, and served as president in 1951-1952 and 1952-1953; John Allen, one of the city’s founders; and Arborview.

In reference to naming the school after Haisley, Mrs. Nesbit said, “It is a fitting name. He gave service for many, many years and we would like to honor him.”

A plaque bearing Haisley’s name is to be placed in the school.

70 Per Cent Complete

A progress report on the school shows the general contract work, briefly held up by a delay in tile delivery, is now 70 per cent complete.

The mechanical contractor, with 60 per cent completed, is ready to install ceiling radiant heating panels and is pressing the general contractor to complete more necessary preliminary work.

The electrical contract is well ahead of other work, the report states.

A change order costing $149 was approved last night to make sky lights in the corridors flush with the ceiling.
