Was County Welfare Worker 40 Years

Fred C. Haist, 81, a county welfare worker for 40 years prior to his 1948 retirement, died this morning at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital. He had been ill for the last five days. His home was at 716 W. Liberty St.

Mr. Haist, a Lima township farmer as a young man, was township supervisor from 1901 to 1918 and from 1919 to 1920. His first work with needy persons of the county came during those years, when as supervisor he was authorized to appropriate township funds for immediate relief in cases of need.

In 1922, he came to Ann Arbor to live, and in 1925 was elected to Washtenaw county’s relief agency—then a three-man board of superintendents of the poor. Without pay, the three men handled most of the county’s relief work, about 25 cases a month. Funds were raised by taxing the townships in which the needy families lived.

Mr. Haist was a case worker for the County Department of Social Welfare when he retired June 1, 1948. He and his wife, the former Pauline Eschelbach, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary April 27, 1949.

Mr. Haist was born April 14, 1873, in Lima township, a son of Jacob and Mary Wacker Haist. A member of Zion Lutheran Church of Rogers Corners, Freedom township, and a charter member of the Brotherhood of the church, he was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three brothers, George Haist of Lima township, Adolph Seitz of Lima Center and Emmanuel Seitz of Mt. Clemens; and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Herzog of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Oscar Bahnmiller of Manchester.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Freedom township, with the Rev. M. W. Brueckner officiating. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. Mr. Haist will like in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m.

Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel until 11 a.m. Friday.
