Man Who Operated City's First Garage Dies In California
Word has been received here of the death of Harry W. McClure, of San Francisco, Calif., who built and operated the first public garage in Ann Arbor in 1907 at 311 Maynard St. He had lived in San Francisco since 1940.
Mr. McClure was graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1900 and later attended the University College of Engineering. He completed his engineering course at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity.
Mr. McClure owned one of the first automobiles in Ann Arbor. He and the late Howard Coffin worked together in building an automobile in the early days of automotive history.
He built the Ann Arbor Garage, the first concrete building in the city on the site now occupied by University Press.
Surviving are his wife, Winifred DePue, who was born in Ann Arbor; and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle McClure Stone and Mrs. Roxie McClure Snow, both of Grosse Pointe.
Burial will be in Ligonier, Pa., his childhood home.
