SLAUSON ADDITIONS COMPLETED: The new $785,000 three-wing addition to Slauson Junior High at 1019 W. Washington St. will be on public display from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The exterior of the classroom wing at the back of the building is shown above. Open house is also planned at the $200,000 Northside School additions Sunday during the same hours. Pictures of that addition will be shown on this page tomorrow.

THIS IS IT: The long and eagerly awaited Slauson swimming pool is shown above, complete with a class of boys receiving instructions from Coach Ray D. Nicholson. The spacious 75-foot pool is 9 1/2 feet at its deepest point. The deep end of the pool has been roped off, with non-swimmers allowed only in the shallow (far) end. Note balcony above. Bleacher seats were behind camera. While school swimming pools have been criticized as "frills", Principal Harold M. Logan points out that, unlike football and other team sports, swimming can be continued throughout life.

TYPICAL CLASSROOM: Typical of the new classrooms is the one above, where James Scheu teaches a seventh grade class mathematics. Materials used are similar to other new classrooms in the city, with acoustic tile ceiling, asphalt tile floor and cinderblock walls painted in soft colors. Also typical is use of glass brick in upper part of window and green chalk boards to cut glare. Not visible are natural wood-finished cabinets on inside walls.

MUSIC-CAFETERIA WING: The third wing, at right of main entrance to school, houses the music department on the top floor and cafeteria on ground floor. Cafeteria windows are not visible below edge of ravine into which wing is built. Kasurin and Kasurin of Ann Arbor, architects for the original building, designed the additions. Kurtz Building Co., also of Ann Arbor, was general contractor, beginning work in November, 1953.

NEW WING THROUGH WINDOW: The new classroom wing at the back of the original school is visible from Principal Harold M. Logan's office window. The classroom wing includes 12 classrooms and an art department.

POOL EXTERIOR: The swimming pool wing at the left of the main school entrance extends north from the gymnasium. Light yellow brick was chosen to match the original school as nearly as possible. Doorway at right provides outside access to swimming pool bleacher section. Note how wing was built into side of ravine.

INSTRUMENT LOCKERS: Ricky Zemke replaces his instrument in its case, preparatory to putting it into one of the natural wood-finished lockers which line the hall leading to band and orchestra rooms.

CAFETERIA: While soft colors are used in most of the new rooms, the spacious new cafeteria is gay with two chartreuse yellow and two coral walls. The ceiling is white, and the floor is brown asphalt tile. The cafeteria, seating 350 students, is furnished with plastic-topped, natural-finished maple tables and chairs. Door in center background leads to the food counter. Beyond door at right is a faculty lunchroom.

LOTS OF ROOM FOR MUSIC: The spacious new music department includes two large rooms for band and orchestra and several individual practice rooms. Donald J. Shetler (right foreground) directs the band while the orchestra practices in room beyond open door at right. Between the two large rooms are glass-walled offices (center) and a uniform room (left background). The new additions were opened room by room and unit by unit during the first semester to help relieve crowding of the 790 pupils enrolled in the school, one of Ann Arbor's two junior high buildings.

ART ROOMS: The two art rooms are separated by glass walls. Mrs. Ione Simons (center background) places a roof on a model house. Balsa model is seen in foreground, and other examples of art work are posted around the room. Finishing touches were being placed on all the new rooms this week for the open house Sunday.
