IT’S AN EFFORT: Pioneer Bruce Schneeberger’s facial expression seems a bit twisted during this pole-vaulting action in Saturday's Regional Meet at Wines Field. He cleared the bar at better than 11 feet here but missed qualifying for this week’s State Championships.

Ann Arbor Places Second In Regional Track Meet

Qualifying in five events and both relays for Saturday’s State Finals at East Lansing, Ann Arbor High placed second to Flint Northern in the Regional Track Championships Saturday at Wines Field.

Northern took top honors by winning its third straight regional title, scoring 56 ½ points to the Pioneers’ 35-7/10, and placing men in 10 positions for the State Meet.

Nick Rayer was the only Pioneer individual winner. The barefooted half-miler covered the distance in 2:05.8 in the first part of the two section race.

Both Pioneer relay teams finished second behind the Flint Northern quartettes. Tom Boyd, George Batsakes, Bill Burd, and Bill Thomas comprised the medley-relay squad and Bob Correll, Elmer Rush, Dick Williams, and Thomas made up the 880 team.

Rush qualified for two places as he took second in the 220 and third in the 100. The two other qualifiers were Bruce Schneeberger, third in the pole vault, and Tom Surd, second in the broad jump.

In Class B two records were broken and another tied as Adrian won its first championship since 1948.

Howell qualified four men for as many events as Doug Drew tied for first in the pole vault, John Clark ran second in the 440, Hal Haller took second in the 880, and Larry Goniea, picked off third in the high hurdles. Milan was stopped with one qualifier—Len Love, who tied for first in the high jump. These and other Class B thinclads will battle for state recognition in Saturday’s Class B and Class D section of the State Championships slated for Michigan’s Ferry Field track.
