A University of Michigan Medical School graduate died of a fractured neck last night after falling down a flight of stairs at the Children's Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
The victim was Dr. Martha Usher, 26, daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Carlton F. Wells of 8 Harvard Pl. She was the former Martha Wells.
Prof. and Mrs. Wells today were en route to Philadelphia by plane.
Authorities there reported to the family that Dr. Usher was found at the foot of a flight of stairs late last night. She succumbed without regaining consciousness.
It it not known whether anyone witnessed the accident. Reportedly an autopsy is to be performed to shed light on the death.
Mrs. Usher and her husband, Dr. Robert H., both had been interns at the Philadelphia hospital since Mrs. Usher graduated at the top of her University Medical School class last year.
After winning a college scholarship in September, 1946, in state-wide competition, Dr. Usher attended Swarthmore College for two years, transferring and graduating from McGill University, Montreal, in May, 1950. She entered the University Medical School September of that year, graduating in June, 1954, with a MD degree.
She was married to Dr. Usher of Montreal on June 27, 1953.
Prof. Warner G. Rice, an associate of Prof. Wells, said this morning that funeral arrangements were still pending.
